Is the European Union Comatose?

Recent years have been full of scholarly and journalistic analyses about the decline of the United States. A great number of analysts have been incessantly underlining a downward spiral in the power of the United States as global politics has emerged as more multi-polar and polycentric. According to them, one of the reasons why the United States is no longer in a predominant position to help shape the rules of the international order relates to the institutional, economic and political problems engulfing the European Union, the second pillar of the so-called liberal world order.

This article does not support the doomsday scenarios inscribed for the EU, yet underlines that the EU has been suffering from serious issues that could potentially hamper its ability to play a credible and capable role as a global power, either individually or along with the United States.
