Military Involvement in Syria: Regional and Global Opportunities for Russia

On September 30, President Putin of Russia submitted a proposal to the Federation Council, the upper House of the Russian Parliament, asking it to authorize the use of the Russian Armed Forces contingent outside the country. According to the Kremlin website, the request was based on the generally recognized principles and norms of international law as well as on Article 102.1(d) of the Russian Federation’s constitution. Permission was granted by Parliament after which the Russian air force started operations over Syrian territory.

 

The Russian political elite had vey quickly turned their attention from the Ukrainian crisis to providing military support for the Assad regime. As a result many questions have emerged amongst experts including the key question of what are the opportunities, risks and consequences of the Syrian operation for the Russian Federation and for the area of the Middle East?
