International Middle East Congress Has Been Successfully Held

The International Middle East Congress was held between December 1-2nd 2011 at Kocaeli University. The congress was organized with the joint contributions of the Wise Men Center for Strategic Studies (BILGESAM), Kocaeli University, Corvinus University of Budapest and Eurasian National University (Kazakhstan).


The congress commenced with the speeches of Prof. Hasret Çomak (president of the congress and the vice rector of Kocaeli University), Assoc. Prof. Atilla Sandıklı (president of BILGESAM), Sezer Şener Komşuoğlu (rector of Kocaeli University), İbrahim Karaosmanoğlu (mayor of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality), and Assoc. Prof. László Csıcsmann of Corvinus University.


In his speech, “Transformation in the Middle East and Turkey,” Sandıklı briefly talked about the geography of the Middle East and its geopolitical and geostrategic importance. Touching on the socio-cultural structure of the region, Sandıklı explained Turkey’s Middle East perception in the 20th and 21st centuries, discussing what should be done upon the repercussions of the recent Arab Spring. In the last minutes of his speech, BILGESAM’s president stated that the Arab Spring has given birth to both risks and opportunities, adding that these risks could be reduced and opportunities could be increased accordingly, thanks to academic research. Additionally, he acted as the chair of the conference session “Conflict Analysis and Resolutions I,” conducting a presentation entitled “Iran’s Foreign Policy Vision and Geopolitical Goals” with Bilgehan Emeklier, a specialist from BILGESAM’s Security Institute.


Prof. Oktay Alnıak, a member of BILGESAM’s Executive Board, also made a presentation entitled “Peace and Enlightenment Center for the Middle East” and acted as the chair of the “Conflict Analysis and Resolutions II” session. Likewise, Prof. Hasret Çomak, a member of BILGESAM’s Executive Board and the President of International Middle East Congress, presented the paper entitled “Jurisdiction Zones in the East Mediterranean.”


Moreover, Assoc. Prof. Abbas Karaağaçlı, the director of BILGESAM’s Institute for Central Asia, shared his presentation “The Impacts of Radicalism and Imported Modernity on the Arab Spring.”  Erdem Kaya, BILGESAM’s Research Coordinator, presented the paper “Turkey-Israel Relations: The Far End of Up Down Movement” which he prepared with Assoc. Prof. Atilla Sandıklı.
