Anomalies in Turkey-NATO Relations: Who's to Blame?

In August 2018, the President of Turkey iterated in his New York Times op-ed that,Unilateral actions against Turkey by the United States will undermine American interests and force Turkey to look for other friends and allies. President Tayyip Erdogan’s remarks came in the aftermath of Washington’s constricting economic and financial sanctions imposed on Turkey. Trump’s punitive measures against Turkey, due to the detained American citizen Andrew Brunson, resulted in the Turkish currency Lira plummeting to record lows against the USD, increasing fears that the Turkish economy would cave in altogether. The sanctions targeting Turkey, a NATO ally, were reminiscent of those imposed against Iran.
