We hope that the book China A New Superpower? Dimensions of Power, Energy, and Security will maintain the intellectual interest in the ongoing ascendance of China in global economy and world politics and enrich the relevant academic literature.
The People’s Republic of China with a fast growing economy in the last decades has created its own political and economic spheres of influence and came to be one of the leading players in global trade. China utilizing the opportunities of globalization in the post-Cold War period has achieved to integrate its economy with global markets and transformed into an actor capable of affecting the balances in world economy. The consequences of its economic advance and ever increasing energy consumption have emerged as significant variables in the making of international politics. In parallel to its growing influence worldwide, Beijing has begun to enjoy the necessary clout to protect its own interests at global scale. With its expanding military build-up, China is also generating concerns beyond its immediate surroundings.
Explanation of the rapid economic development of China in a short period of time thus is the first motivation behind publishing the book China A New Superpower? Dimensions of Power, Energy, and Security. Another motive appeared from the need to analyze the impact of such expeditious economic development on world politics and the capacity of the People’s Republic of China to be a new superpower. The book is composed of articles, official papers, and conference presentations which deal with the geopolitics, foreign policy, military and economic power, and energy needs of China.
